There are about 14 genera and about 1000 species worldwide with 5 genera and 53 species in southern Africa.

Genera native or naturalised in southern Africa

Ampelocissus

About 100 species worldwide with 2 species found in southern Africa: Ampelocissus africana is found in northern Namibia, and Ampelocissus obtusata is found in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa (Limpopo province).

 

Cayratia

About 50 species, found in tropical regions of the Old World. Cayratia gracilis is the only species found in southern Africa (in Mpumalanga). 

 

Cissus

About 200 species, found mainly in tropical and subtropical regions, with 8 species occurring in southern Africa.

 

Cyphostemma

About 250 species, found in tropical and subtropical regions, with 34 species found in southern Africa.

Cyphostemma juttae

Rhoicissus

The 10 species are all native to Africa, with 7 of them occurring in southern Africa.

 

Cultivated genera in southern Africa

Ampelopsis

About 25 species, native to Asia and North America. Most are woody, deciduous shrubs but some grow as shrubs. Grown as garden ornamentals.

 

Parthenocissus

A Genus of about 10 species of deciduous tendril climbers found in the Himalayas, E. Asia, and North America. Grown as garden ornamentals.

Vitis (grapevine genus)

About 65 species, found in north temperate regions. Most species are woody, deciduous tendril climbers, but some can be shrub-like. The Grapevine Vitis vinifera originates from Orient and northwest India and is widely grown for production of table grapes, grapejuice, wine and vineager.
