Four genera and about 75 species (Old World, mainly Northern Hemisphere), of which one genus occurs in southern Africa with one species indigenous and two naturalised.

Genera indigenous in southern Africa

Tamarix (tamarisks)

About 50 species (Old World, mainly Mediterranean basin) of which one species is indigenous and two are naturalised in southern Africa. The naturalised species are Tamarix chinensis (Chinese tamarisk) and Tamarix ramosissima (Pink tamarisk, Perstamarisk) and they are declared Category 1 invasive plants in the Northern Cape, Western Cape and Eastern Cape, and Category 3 invasive plants in the rest of South Africa.
