About 8 species, all native to the New World. Datura ferox (Large thorn apple, Grootstinkblaar), Datura innoxia (Downy thorn apple, Harige stinkblaar) and Datura stramonium (Common thorn apple, Gewone stinkblaar) are declared Category 1 invasive plants in South Africa.
