There are six genera and 58 species (worldwide) with one genus (Nymphaea) and two species indigenous in southern Africa.

About 40 species worldwide (cosmopolitan) of which two are indigenous in southern Africa.

The species name is listed if there is only one species of the genus that is cultivated.

Victoria amazonica (Giant water lily)

Indigenous to Brazil and the Guianas.

 

Nelumbo used to be included under Nymphaeaceae, but now falls in the Nelumbonaceae in the order Proteales.
