Musaceae (banana family)

Two genera (Ensete and Musa) and 35 species, with one species, Ensete ventricosum, indigenous to southern Africa and three species of Musa cultivated in the region, including Musa acuminata (Banana, Plantain).

Genera indigenous to southern Africa

Ensete

About 25 species (subtropics extending from Africa to Asia and New Guinea), with one species, Ensete ventricosum, indigenous to southern Africa. This species occurs in the Limpopo province in forests with high rainfall, occurring usually in ravines and along streams.

 

Other genera, cultivated in southern Africa

Musa (banana genus)

Three species are recorded as being cultivated in southern Africa, the most well known being Musa acuminata (Banana, Plantain)
