Equisetales (horsetails)
Marattiales (marattioid ferns)

One species, Marattia fraxinea, native to southern Africa.

Polypodiales (leptosporangiate ferns)

Ophioglossales (ophioglossoid ferns)

One genus (Ophioglossum) native to southern Africa with 14 in the region.

Psilotales (whisk ferns)

One species, Psilotum nudum, native to southern Africa.

Ferns are still widely referred to as pteridophytes (in the Pteridophyta) but this term includes not only the groups above but also the groups in the Lycopodiophyta. The latest phylogenetic analyses, using molecular and morphological information, show that the Pteridophyta is paraphyletic.
