Monilophyta (ferns, including horsetails)

Classification

Equisetales (horsetails)
Marattiales (marattioid ferns) 

One species, Marattia fraxinea, indigenous to southern Africa.

 

Polypodiales (leptosporangiate ferns)

Ophioglossales (ophioglossoid ferns)

One genus (Ophioglossum) indigenous to southern Africa  with 14 in the region.

 

Psilotales (whisk ferns)

One species, Psilotum nudum, indigenous to southern Africa.

 

Ferns are still widely referred to as pteridophytes (in the Pteridophyta) but this term includes not only the groups above but also the groups in the Lycopodiophyta. The latest phylogenetic analyses, using molecular and morphological information, show that the Pteridophyta is paraphyletic.
