There are five genera and about 40-50 species in this cosmopolitan family, with 2 genera and 6 species occurring in southern Africa.

Nymphoides

About 20 species, native to Africa, Asia, East Indies, Australia and New Zealand, with 5 species in southern Africa.

Nymphoides indica

Villarsia

About 16 species, native to SE Asia, Australia and southern Africa, with 1 species, Villarsia capensis, occurring in southern Africa (endemic to the Western Cape, in marshes).
