About 182 genera and 4570 species, native mainly to tropical and subtropical regions, especially South America. Six genera and 19 species are native to southern Africa, one genus and species are naturalised, and an additional four genera and 11 species are cultivated in the region.

Dissotis

About 120 species, native to Africa, with six species native to southern Africa.

 

Melastomastrum

Four species, native to Africa, with only one, Melastomastrum segregatum, native to southern Africa (northern Namibia). See Flora of Zimbabwe.

 

Memecylon

About 150 species (Africa, Asia and Australia), with five species native to southern Africa.

 

Tristemma

One species is native to southern Africa - Tristemma mauritianum (recorded from Zimbabwe). See Flora of Zimbabwe.

 

Warneckia

Two species native to southern Africa - Warneckia sousae (Mozambique) and Warneckia sansibaricum (Zimbabwe).

Heterocentron

About 27 species, native to Mexico and central America. Heterocentron macrostachyum has become naturalised in southern Africa.
