Two genera and 227 species, indigenous to the Americas and Southeast Asia to Malesia. Both genera and species are cultivated in southern Africa.

Magnolia

16 species cultivated, including three species previously placed in the genus Michelia (now synonymised with Magnolia).

 

Liriodendron

Two species cultivated.

 

Illicium verum (Star anise) use to be included in the Magnoliaceae but is now in the Illiciaceae.

Drimys was once placed in the Magnoliaceae, but now falls in the Winteraceae
