Seven genera and 430 species (cosmopolitan), with two genera (Juncus and Luzula) and 18 species indigenous to southern Africa, five species naturalised, and an additional one species that is cultivated.

Genera indigenous to southern Africa

Juncus

About 250 species (cosmopolitan), with about 17 species indigenous to southern Africa and five naturalised. Generally found in moist situations such as along margins of streams, dams and vleis.

 

Luzula

About 80 species (cosmopolitan, but mainly north temperate regions), with one species, Luzula africana, indigenous to southern Africa. In addition, Luzula nivea has been recorded as being cultivated in southern Africa (Glen 2002).
