Genera native to southern Africa

Anthocleista

About 50 species, native mainly to tropical Africa, Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands. One species, Anthocleista grandiflora, occurs in southern Africa. Anthocleista in the past has been more commonly placed under the family Loganiaceae.

About 30 species, native to tropical and subtropical Africa and Madagascar, with 16 species in southern Africa.

Enicostema

Three species, 1 from America, 1 from Madagascar and 1 from Africa and Asia. The latter species is Enicostema hyssopifolium and occurs in southern Africa.

Exacum

About 65 species, native to Madagascar, Socotra, Sri Lanka, southern India, SE Asia, New Guinea, Australia and Africa. One species, Exacum oldenlandioides, native to southern Africa.

Neurotheca

Three species, native to tropical Africa, with 1 species, Neurotheca schlechteri in KwaZulu-Natal.

One species, Orphium frutescens, endemic to the Western Cape.

One species, Pycnosphaera buchananii, native to tropical Africa and extends into southern Africa (Okavango Swamps in Botswana).

Sebaea

About 159 species, native mainly to Africa and Madagascar but with 1 species extending to India and China and 2 in Australia and New Zealand. There are 53 species in southern Africa.

Swertia

About 100 species, native mainly to Europe and America, but with 1 species, Swertia welwitschii (= Swertia stellarioides) in southern Africa.
