A family of mainly aquatic plants containing 10 genera and 1160 species (pantropical, extending into temperate regions), with three genera and 25 species native to southern Africa.

One species native to southern Africa - Mesanthemum africanum (recorded from Zimbabwe).



About 80 species (mainly South American but also Africa), with two species native to southern Africa: Syngonanthus wahlbergii (Limpopo and Mpumalanga) and Syngonanthus longibracteatus (recorded from Zimbabwe).
