Submerged, perennial marine plants. There are five genera and 16 species (tropical seas), with two genera and two species in off the coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and Mozambique.

Halodule

Seven species (widespread in tropical seas), with one species, Halodule uninervis, found off the coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal and further north off Mozambique.

Thalassodendron

Two species (coasts of E Africa, E Malaysia and W Australia), with Thalassodendron ciliatum occurring in the western Indian Ocean, including off the coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal.
