There are 17 genera and 170 species, found in the Old World, with 12 genera and  67 species indigenous to southern Africa.

Androcymbium

About 40 species, mainly African but one species also in the Mediterranean regon. There are about 28 species in southern Africa.

 

Baeometra

One species: Baeometra uniflora, found in the Western Cape.

 

Camptorrhiza

One species: Camptorrhiza strumosa, found in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, and the northern parts of South Africa.

 

Gloriosa

About 6 closely related species found in Africa and Asia. The one species in southern Africa is Gloriosa superba.

Hexacyrtis

One species: Hexacyrtis dickiana, found in Namibia.

 

Iphigenia

About 15 species, found in Africa, Madagascar, India, Australia and New Zealand. Iphigenia bechuanica is the only species in southern Africa, found in Namibia, Botswana, Northern Province, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.

 

Littonia

Eight species, found in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. There are two species in southern Africa.

 

Neodregea

One species: Neodregea glassii, found in Western and Eastern Cape. 

 

Onixotis

Four species of which 2 are found in the southern Africa, in the Western Cape.

 

Ornithoglossum

Eight species, found in tropical and southern Africa and all occurring in southern  Africa.

 

Sandersonia

One species: Sandersonia aurantiaca: found in Mpumalanga, Swaziland, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape.

 

Wurmbea

About 37 species, found in Australia (19 species) and southern Africa (18 species).

 

There are no recorded additional, exotic, genera cultivated in southern Africa.
