Two genera and six species (patchily distributed worldwide), with one species, Brasenia schreberi, widely distributed worldwide, including in southern Africa.

One species, Brasenia schreberi, which has a wide distribution, through America, Australia and Africa. Within southern Africa it is a common species in the Okavango Swamps, Botswana.
