Family: Basellaceae

There are four genera and about 20 species (mainly tropical and subtropical South America but also in Africa and Asia) of which one genus with one species is indigenous in southern Africa and one genus with one species is naturalised in this region.

* Anredera

About 10-15 species (S Florida and Texas through to Argentina), of which one species, Anredera cordifolia (Madeira vine, Bridal wreath) has become naturalised in southern Africa and is a declared Category 1 invasive plant in South Africa.

 

Basella

About five species of which one species, Basella alba (Malabar spinach, Ceylon spinach), is distributed through Africa and Asia, including in southern Africa.
