There are 2 genera in this family of which the cosmopolitan holly genus Ilex, which includes about 400 species, is by far the largest. The family is represented in southern Africa by one indigenous species, the Cape Holly Ilex mitis

Ilex (hollies)

About 400 species (mainly Asia and America) of which one, Ilex mitis (Cape holly), is indigenous in southern Africa. A number of other species are cultivated in gardens in southern Africa.
