Bulb contains non-lethal haemolytic saponin and
alkaloids, and causes vomiting and diarrhoea if eaten. Fifty-one species
are native to southern Africa and there is a further species (Cyrtanthus
welwitschii) occurring further north, its distribution including
Angola and Malawi.
