Psocodea (bark lice and parasitic lice)

Life > Eukaryotes > Opisthokonta > Metazoa (animals) > Bilateria > Ecdysozoa > Panarthropoda > Tritocerebra > Phylum: Arthopoda > Mandibulata > Atelocerata > Panhexapoda > Hexapoda > Insecta (insects) > Dicondyla > Pterygota > Metapterygota > Neoptera > Eumetabola > Paraneoptera

Bark lice are small insects with a characteristic swollen head. They feed mainly on fungus but also on unicellular algae , lichens and bits of plant and insect tissue. Some species can be pests of stored products. Bark lice and parasitic lice were previously placed in separate orders, the Psocoptera and Phthiraptera respectively. However, molecular studies show that in fact parasitic lice evolved from bark lice. The name Phiraptera is retained here but should no longer be viewed as an order and instead is treated here as a subordinate taxon of the Psocodea at no particular defined rank.
