geophyte. A plant that has an undeground storage system (either a bulb or a rhizome). The above ground portions of the plant typically die off during the dry parts of the year but the plant is able to resprout using food reserves in the undeground portion. Geophytes are therefore able to live longer than a year and are therefore perennials.
