calyx (plural calyces) (botany). The outer envelope of a flower, made up of free or united sepals. The calyx and corolla (with petals) together make up the perianth of a flower and in some flowers they are combined and undifferentiated from one another so that instead of differentiating between sepals and petals, we refer to the individual parts as tepals. See perianth for illustrations.
