Tiny beetles (< 2 mm long) that are associated with aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats. There are about 60 described species worldwide, of which less than 10 occur in southern Africa.

Hydroscaphidae

Tiny aquatic beetles with clubbed antennae. Larvae and adults feed on jelly-like algae. Likely to occur in southern Africa but not yet recorded. 

 

Microsporidae

Tiny beetles, which are aquatic in the larval stage. One known species from southern Africa. 

 

Torridincolidae (torrent beetles)

Tiny aquatic beetles (< 2 mm long). In southern Africa known mainly from perennial mountain streams. 

 

Sphaeriidae

Minute beetles (< 1 mm long) with clubbed antennae. Adults and larvae live at the edge of streams in mud and gravel. Likely to occur in southern Africa but not yet recorded.
